Abstract

Religious education in Brazilian public schools faces complex challenges, especially regarding teacher training to address religious diversity and the principle of secularism. This article analyzes these difficulties, grounded in relevant bibliographical references, identifying gaps in teacher training and the lack of educational materials encompassing religious plurality. Examples of institutional resistance and the lack of specific training in secularism illustrate the urgency of this discussion. Based on academic studies and debates on pedagogical practice, the article proposes the creation of a degree in Religious Studies, highlighting the relevance of this training to empower educators to promote inclusive teaching. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of continuous education and digital technologies, which can enrich pedagogical approaches and facilitate the inclusion of various religious traditions. These proposals aim to promote education that respects diversity and contributes to forming critical, tolerant citizens prepared for coexistence in a pluralistic society.
