WATCH AND PUNISH: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN THE WORK OF MICHEL FOUCAULT AND THE BRAZILIAN PRISON SYSTEM

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the work of Michel Foucault, Monitor and punish – the birth of prison, in view of the brazilian prison system in force. Foucault's work is divided into four parts: punishment, punishment, discipline and imprisonment. In the first part, of the torment, the body of the condemned and the ostentation of the torments are analyzed. In the second part of the punishment, the widespread punishment and mitigation of penalties are described. In the third part of the discipline, the docile bodies, the art of distributions, the control of activities, the organization of genesis, the composition of forces, the resources for good training, hierarchical surveillance, normalizing sanction, examination and panoptism. In the fourth and final part, the prison, complete and austere institutions, illegality and delinquency and the prison. After analyzing Foucault's work, a comparative timeline will be made between the author's proposition and the prison system in force in Brazil.
