Abstract

This article analyzes the figure of the monster in different cultural and narrative contexts. Initially, it presents the origin of the term and its symbolic evolution from the Middle Ages to contemporary culture. Then, it examines representations of the monster in literature, myths, and productions in modern cultures, highlighting its symbolic and narrative functions. The analysis demonstrates that this figure assumes multiple and often dichotomous meanings, being able to represent both external and internal evil. It concludes that interpretations of the monster reveal distortions of human morality and can serve as an instrument of critique of ethics.
