THE IMPORTANCE OF NURSING CARE IN THE TREATMENT OF USERS WITH COCAINE DEPENDENCE

Abstract

This integrative review aimed to analyze nursing approaches in the care of individuals dependent on cocaine, based on studies addressing harm reduction strategies, involuntary hospitalization, and interventions in Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs (CAPS-AD). Most investigations employed qualitative methods, such as semi-structured interviews and content analysis, allowing an understanding of health professionals’ perceptions regarding care for substance users. Findings indicate that establishing a therapeutic bond, active listening, health education, and family involvement are essential for effective nursing practice. Involuntary hospitalization, although frequent, often disregards patients’ autonomy and individual characteristics, which may negatively affect treatment outcomes. Conversely, CAPS-AD are highlighted for adopting a person-centered approach, offering individualized therapeutic plans, interprofessional collaboration, and promoting social reintegration. It is concluded that nurses play a crucial role in aligning institutional guidelines with individual needs, acting ethically, empathetically, and with a patient-centered focus. Strategies based on harm reduction, strengthening the nurse–patient relationship, and psychosocial support have proven effective in improving mental health and facilitating social reintegration for people dependent on cocaine. These findings reinforce the importance of evidence-based nursing practices that respect human rights and promote comprehensive, compassionate care.
